Spring?!

70. 74. 79. 78. 75

No, I haven't started playing the Lottery. This, my friends... is THE WEEKS FORECAST! So, needless to say, I will probably not be updating very often :) Spring is coming and we are bustin' out of this house!

The news gets better...
In 3 days we start SPRING BREAK! Woot woot. It's gonna be a good week :)
Happy Monday! And... for goodness sakes, get outside!

I think you have the wrong person

I always assumed that the moment I said my vows some magical gift would fall from above and turn me into this supernaturally talented amazing home decorator. In our first apartment I was shocked and horrified to learn I couldn't even hang a shelf without it looking...goofy.

Fast forward to 2012 and 6 blissful years later. Still battling with making things look...non-goofy. Interior decorating has just never been my talent. I know what I love, what I like to look at, what makes me feel at home - but, putting it all together and attractive is so much harder then it looks.

When I go to Salvation Army on one of my "treasure searches", I can see the finished product in my mind. I just can't see the details in between, the HOW. Thankfully, decorating is not the most important thing in the world... not.even.close. But, all that said, I do love making our house into a home for my husband and children. I enjoy adding bits of beauty here and there to make this place our castle. There's just something awesome about sitting in the dining room and loving how it looks around me. Feeling like it's "ours". I'm so thankful for websites like Houzz.com and Pinterest that share ideas for those of us not so gifted. In my heart, I want to bless and WOW my family with a beautiful setting, creative touches, hand made everythings... but I get discouraged and give up. I think many of us battle this. I'm not known for my amazingly decorated house...

Which is why I was so humbled and surprised to be asked to teach a workshop on... decorating. {gulp} Me?! Have you seen my home? Do you see my bare walls in most every room? Me, teach on decorating? I think you have the WRONG person. And here is where I see so much of God working in my life. He knows my intentions, my heart, my longing to bless in this way... and I've been under such conviction to show hospitality...get over myself and my pride and invite people in. Share Jesus love. Open my home.
Even if I don't have beautiful things in every room, or new furniture, or even if our bathroom is still stark white and nothing to look at.

I accepted this invitation and am planning out the workshop now with a friend. The Lord has blessed and I'm thankful for the great ideas that have come to mind even just in the last few days. I've even gotten some compliments from my family on the "pretty" things I'm doing in my home. We've had people in our home for the last 3 weeks and not once have I stressed or worried about how it looks - I'm welcoming them in love, and that speaks SO MUCH LOUDER then any purchased piece.

I'm humbled. I'm challenged. I'm convicted.
Will you join me in praying for this workshop? I so want to be used by Christ to GLORIFY HIM and point others to HIM...
Not my .49 salvation army decorations. :)

Why I love Weight Watchers...

Right before Thanksgiving 2011 I had had enough.
My "Big" jeans were now getting really tight and uncomfortable.
My "big, baggy" sweaters were now starting to feel too close to me.
I was done with this.

I don't remember struggling with weight ever before in my life. I was athletic and busy all through high school and college. Let's not forget that magic little word, "Metabolism" was HUGE then, too. I've never been petite or small - average to above - at best. But I can't remember a time when I sat down and thought, "Man, I'm huge"... until October 2011. Two babies, little sleep, lots of food and minimal exercise had caught up. I had zero energy, zero motivation, zero tolerance in many many areas. I thought I was sick...but even then in the back of my mind I KNEW what it really was. I had extra weight. It was literally weighing me down. That's a really hard thing to admit to.

I mentioned to my family members that I was thinking of biting the bullet and paying to do Weight Watchers. We don't necessarily have the extra $ to do that kind of thing... but, I knew I needed help and fast, clearly MY methods were doing me NO GOOD! Dad offered to pay for it. And I thought about it more seriously. Then even more seriously. It was decided and I would begin...

Only then did I realize I joined TWO WEEKS BEFORE THANKSGIVING! {my fave holiday... my fave food} You have got to be kidding me!? How could I let this happen? What about the sweet potato casserole and pumpkin pies and mashed potatoes and tons of dark meat turkey and cranberries and grandma's green bean casserole and rolls glorious rolls and aunt kims deviled eggs?! What about those?! Gulp. Too late. I stepped on the scale and saw a number that made everything within me feel sick. How does one let it go this far?
During my first meeting everyone applauded all of us "Crazies" who joined right before the holidays. But then we jumped right into the session on how to make wise choices of all that food before us. I left feeling somewhat defeated by how far I had to go... but encouraged to be educated on what to do.

Long story short - I lost MORE weight over the two major holidays then what normal people do {4lbs}. I still got to eat everything I wanted and never once felt sorry for myself or as if I were missing out on something. Since November I have lost 10 pounds. But then I started to taper off... I think I got a little too sure of myself and how quickly I was losing. I started to assume I could estimate things and cut corners here and there. The weight stopped dropping. I even gained 3lbs back. Dis-couraging. I had quit writing down my food {tracking} and drinks so I had no clue as to what we even going on anymore. I was already back to feeling lousy just with 3lbs back on. Tired. Groggy. Grouchy. Hungry. Always hungry. And my "sleek" feeling of easily slipping the jeans on was returning into, "oh my very word... do I have THREE thighs?".

This weekend I stepped back up. Dusted off my Food tracking journal and got back down to business. I'm on day 3 and I feel AMAZING. Because I'm eating correctly I have tons of energy and I'm sleeping better. I know exactly what I can have and I love the guidelines that help me all through the day. Here's why Weight Watchers works for me:

-Food. I can have anything I want. Seriously... if I wanted to sit and eat candy all day long, I could - as long as I stayed within my "Points". I don't recommend eating candy all day, though. Trust me.
This is a good situation for me - I don't have to buy special foods {that we don't have money for} or worry about shopping anywhere specific. What my family is eating I can eat. Bonus: Most fruits and Veggies are all Zero points value so I can eat as much as I need to be full. For example - at lunch today I was still pretty hungry after my meal so I warmed up a serving of green beans, threw on some yummy spices and got to fill up on them! I was satisfied and they were delicious. Bananas are my saving grace usually - they fill me up, are sweet, so they cut that sweet tooth and are loaded with amazing nutrients to help me feel good.

-Tracking. Writing down everything I eat shows me my "weak" hours of the day and how I can plug in the correct foods/drinks to help me stay on track. If I want something special or out of the norm, say... a snickers bar... I can plan around that and stay right in line with where I need to be! :)

-Meetings. My leader is such a great gal. She is passionate and considerate and full of energy. It helps me to know she has lost her weight with the SAME program I'm using and still uses it to stay on track. It's a great opportunity to interact with new people and every meeting is encouraging. When I hit my 10lb mark I was applauded and cheered for. Women need that validation {at least I do!} and encouragement to keep going! I also really enjoy the meetings because they share recipes and ideas all the time. I've left almost every time feeling rejuvenated and ready to go at it again another week :)

-Results. This program works. Not only does it work but it's so easy. Stay within your points and lose weight. I don't even work out and I'm losing weight. It's all about portions and control and I love how easy it is. I heard another member say at a meeting once, "if you REALLY do the program it REALLY works, if you KINDA do the program, it KINDA works", and that has been true of my life. It always works...but could work more if I would really kick it up!

I'm not at a place where I'm ready to post a "fat" picture and then later post another one showing progress. Buahahaha - please, I don't wanna see that so I'm sure nobody else does either! But I will tell you - Weight watchers works and its easy and helpful and even kind of fun. So thankful the Lord is teaching me through this too...about my selfishness and lack of self control. Here's to 10 more pounds and 10 more lessons learned! My husband and I are going to San Diego in October, just the two of us, for a conference. My goal is to be down at least another 10 by then. We shall see :)

If you are at all considering... let this be your nudge to go ahead. It's worth it. :)

Happy Homemaker Monday!!!

You know that old Amy Grant Song, "Angels watchin' over me".... yea, we had a few of those moments last week. My 9 month old took a tumble down our basement stairs :( Praise God I had a mound of dirty clothes at the bottom and she only got a small bruise above her left eyebrow. Could have been MUCH.WORSE. But now that song is just on my brain... so, if you need an old school Amy Grant moment click here. :) Added bonus, the 80's technology. It will blow your mind :)

Anyway... Happy Monday fellow Homemakers! I'll admit, this momma is draaaaging this morning. The good news is - after a weekend of ministry in our home, the house is pretty much clean, so it feels so low pressure around here. Ok, let's get to it!

The weather::: It was a high of 16 lastnight! :) Today will be in the 40's again... still the weirdest winter I've experienced by far. Snow one day, 60's the next, rain the next, freezing again the next... My poor tulips are confused and have started coming up. Is that normal!?

On my reading pile::: "The Meaning of Marriage", "Made to Crave", and... had to plug the ol' Nook in to charge it up so I could finish "Jo's Boys" this week!

On my TV::: TV is off today.

On the menu for this week:::

Monday - Going to Zombie Burger for dinner tonight with a friend :) Weird decor, but great food!

Tuesday - Pesto Chicken Penne

Wednesday - Let's be honest...probably PB&J. Ministry night and crazy busy. We watched the movie "Supersize Me" and may never do fastfood again. {ugh} Which was our usual Weds. night before church special :)

Thursday -Chicken Potpie & cheddar biscuits

Friday - Beef & Tater Bake

Saturday - Southwest Pork & Pasta

Sunday - Leftovers :) - the pork/pasta dishes serves 10! And we def only have 3 eating!

On my to do list::: Laundry day! Upstairs bedrooms, reload dishwasher, FIND SPRING DECOR

What I am sewing, crocheting, knitting or creating::: Didn't get my baby blanket done in time for the shower this weekend. BUT started on the next color :) Yay for some progress!

In Homeschooling::: My oldest child is 3 {just turned} so we aren't doing school yet. BUT, started thinking through some ideas and will start research on curriculum, etc. soon!

Looking around the house:::
Clean! Had a "Sprinkle" for my friend who is prego with baby boy #4 this past weekend. I still have the decor up...so fresh! Lemons and limes and lots of yellow and white. Makes me want Spring... NOW!

From the camera:::
There is nothing more beautiful, I think, then a prego lady! My dear friend Brooke at her "Sprinkle" this weekend. :) Loved hosting in my home and getting to shower her with love and "refreshment".

Something fun to share::: Uhhh...feeling a little lame. Nothing fun to share today :/

On my prayer list::: Teens walking away from the Lord... Youth ministry in general... Friend visiting this week, praying for a great visit!

Bible verse, Devotional::: Really encouraged by Zeph. 3:17. When life seems nuts and confusing and I feel like I'm just a whirlwind... I'm rejoiced over. I'm REJOICED OVER!

"The Lord your God is with you. He is a hero who saves you. He happily rejoices over you, renews you with his love, and celebrates over you with shouts of joy. "

Thursday night DATE NIGHT

It's Thursday!!! Which, in this home means DATE NIGHT! If you aren't familiar with what I'm talking about here's a recap. A few months ago my husband and I decided to go through the book "The Meaning of Marriage" by Timothy and Kathy Keller. Instead of spending a ton of money on going out for dinner, desserts, paying for a sitter, etc. We chose to plan date nights at home. That way they could be weekly, comphy and lend to probably a better conversation. :) So, after the kids are down {our children are in bed at 7} we watch a few of our favorite shows, brew some coffee, and then discuss what we've been learning in the book. It's usually quiet, calm, and enriching. Now mind you...we've only gotten to do this twice so far - just with life and obligations, etc. But SO WORTH IT.

Tonight we'll be working through another chapter of the book. And I'll tell you - it was a GOOD one. I'd like to share something with you - a question posed by the author. It's stuck on my brain and has been there for a few days now. I'm challenged, I'm convicted, I have to share. Because I really do see how this is KEY in marriages. Here it is...

"What, then, would the effect be if we were to dive even more deeply into Jesus's teaching and life and works? What if we were to be so immersed in his promises and summonses, his counsels and encouragements, that they dominated our inner life, capturing our imagination, and simply bubbled out spontaneously when we faced some challenge? How would we live if we instinctively, almost unconciously, knew Jesus' mind and heart regarding things that confronted us? When you received criticism, you would never be crushed, because Jesus' love and acceptance of you is so deeply "in there". When you gave criticism, you would be gentle and patient, because your whole inner world would be saturated by a sense of Jesus' loving patience and gentleness with you."

And this, Friends, is right where I am. I needed to be met in this place this week. Reminded that saturation in God and His word are powerful and life-sustaining, really. It changes how I love and respect my husband {or not}, it impacts my relationship with my children, even how I lead teenage girls in our ministry and the relationships I'm building with friends. Oh, how I want to be, like the author says, "instinctively, almost unconsciously" knowing Jesus mind and heart.

I think our date night discussion will be a pretty good one. :)

How are your marriages holding up? What creative things are you doing to better and improve them? I'm still working on my "Date nite" jar - found a $5 bill in the wash the other day, so our fund is building! I'm thinking we can do chinese takeout here soon! A special meal for my special man :)
